SEOUL ART CENTER

  • This compound Culture and Art Center is established to service in the expansion development of the national culture and art to cement culture welfare including international interchange, transmission of tradition and creation of culture and art.
    Its construction started in November 1984 at the foot of Mt. Umyeon 700 Seocho-dong after the ministry of Public Information then proposed the construction of the Seoul Art Center in 1982 in part to promote the national culture and art. The construction took a 10-long year which completed in February 1993. The building which is consisted of tradition and modern touch is another attractive feature of the art center. The building is a work of a Korean architecture Kim Seok-chul, who was selected through international public nomination in 1984.
  • The Art Center is divided in Opera House/Music Hall/Calligraphy Art Museum/Art Museum/Art Library and built on total building area of 36,407 pyong and its land size is 71,026 pyong. The outdoor is formed in Korean Garden/Market/Norimadang (Amphitheater)/Umyeon Pond/Deja vue Square where anyone can enjoy. There is a Kid's World on the first floor of the Hall takes care of preschool kids under the guidance of experienced teachers and assistants while their parents enjoy the performance. There is also banks and art stores for accommodation. The place provides a recreational place for citizens.
  • In addition, the Art Center topped 10 million audiences as of December 8th. This is achieved in 10 years since its very first performance in 1988. The center presented flowers, a Fanfare and a free ticket for the center that is unlimited to any performances and exhibitions for a year to the audience who visited the center as the 1,000th audience.
  • Following the opening of art and culture hall in 1990 and Musical hall and Calligraphy hall in 1989, the Seoul Art Center opened Opera House in 1993 which finally achieved a full view as a compound art and cultural space. At the beginning of its opening in 1988, the number of audience barely reached 300,000 a year however, the number reached million a year after opening additional and full facilities and this year. The number of audiences is expected to reach about 2 million amid the stagnate economy.
  • Considering that the Kennedy Center in the U.S. has attracted about 1.7 million people in 1996, 2 million people stand comparison with the world prominent art centers. The growth of Seoul Art Center in a short period of time could be attributed to development of various kinds of programs and efforts in servicing growth of popularity.
OPERA HOUSE
  • The theater holds all kinds of comprehensive art performance in the Opera House of 2,300 seats, 700 seats of Towol Theater and Jayu Theater that can easily adjust its audience capacity from 300 to 500 which can hold large size Opera including classics/Ballet/Modern Dance/Musical.
  • Seoul Art Center features "Dance of our generation" and "Topic Series" and "Le nozze di Figaro " and Opera "Bat" which were produced at the Art Center.
  • The compact theater focuses on highly experimental performance such as experimental play and performance art, securing its position as Mecca of culture and art.
MUSIC HALL
  • The Music Hall is consisted of a concert hall of 2,600 seats and a recital hall of 400 seats/rehearsal room featuring varieties of concert such as children's concert/winter vacation festival/concert for children's day as a promotional event for children and the world famous orchestra such as Philadelphia and London Symphony orchestra. The Hall also features performance of celebrated performers which satisfies the music lovers.
  • Its biggest asset is the perfect acoustics, and the arena-style stage free of house curtain ensures the clear view and transparent sound from any part of the auditorium.
CALLIGRAPHY HALL
  • This academy is made for increase of calligraphy population and nurture of professional calligraphers and to suggest direction and systematic definition in the history of Korean calligraphy. There are 10 exhibition halls dedicated for calligraphy and 5 classrooms.
  • The calligraphy hall not only exhibits famous works but also carries out various kinds of education programs to expand Korean calligraphy.
  • People interested in learning calligraphy is increasing every year thus the academy for calligraphy is in progress by divided in beginner/intermediate/advance classes in 29 classes.
ARTS HALL

THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR KOREAN TRADITIONAL PERFORMING ARTS

  • The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts is currently consisted of project management, division of music, division of stage, division of Googak promotion, project and promotion team and Googak Research Institute that carries out defining Korean Musicology which are administrative division that perform all kinds of performances, education and promotional business and exclusive art performing organizations to hand down and preserve traditional art as an affiliated organization of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It also operates Googak Museum, a specialized data storing center and to revitalize nationwide Googak, it is planning to open National Busan Googak Center while operating National Namdo Googak Center and The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts.
  • The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Artists committed to advance itself as a world recognizable musical organization in unison with the people through omni-directional activities related to Googak such as holding foreign performances, promotion of Googak and extension, demonstrating active literature activities as well as creation and holding actual performances.
YEAKDANGL

Designed to exhibit traditional beauty, the Yeak-dang was established in 1996. It is the first and largest Korean traditional music theater, with partitioned sections that can seat a total of 800 guests. Within the auditorium large kites have been hung and the stage is made to recreate the atmosphere of a Korean garden, which was used anciently as a traditional performing site, not only to enhance visual pleasure, but also to improve the acoustics.

UMYEONDANG

The Umyeon-dang is a small theater with 300 seats, where the audience can experience an intimate setting close to the stage. It was designed to accommodate various genres in an open-air atmosphere.

BYEOLMAJITEO

Theater under the star located next to and in harmony with Mt. Umyeon, the Byeolmajiteo is the nature-friendly outdoor theater of the NCKTPA. It can accommodate 2000 guests from seasonal and Sunday Open Stage performances of Korean traditional music.

SHIMTEO OR RESTING AREA

The Shimteo located in Mt. Umyeon between the museum and Byeolmajiteo is a tranquil garden with a small size pond. It is always opened to public becoming a favorite spot for people to come and rest.

GOOGAK MUSEUM

The one and only museum specialized for Googak that systematically exhibits, preserves, collects data related to Googak holding history of musical value. The interior, focusing on the center hall, is consisted of the instrument exhibition room, Myeongin room, the history room of Googak, the exhibition room for Jukhyon and 3D image room including an experiential room which is becoming as another attractive feature as a specialized museum.

GOOGAK FM STATION

Googak FM Station was first introduced in Korea on March 2001, as a specialized music radio station and it is a public broadcasting that services to the whole area of Seoul and Gyeonggi (FM99.1MHz) and Namwon (95.9MHz). It started out by announcing a prelude of specialized broadcasting period equipped with significance of period called a catalyser that leads culture challenging period, operation model of broadcasting manpower, state-of-the-art technology equipment such as digital system. As a messenger to promote our culture and music to the world, Googak station is committed to contribute in generalizing and popularizing Googak through realizing the right of audibility nationwide.

GOOGAK PROMOTIONAL ASSOCIATION

The Googak Promotional Association is established in 1987 with aims to cultivate art awareness and to provide traditional culture to the public. The association is leading popularizing our traditional culture through teaching and seminar of traditional culture and in particular, through the study and short/mid-term courses of schooling from The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts since 1995, it has been contributed significantly on development of Googak by cultivating specialists as well as devotees of Googak.
